A West Des Moines man, James Christopher Miller, has been arrested for child endangerment after a narcotics investigation. Officers were called to his apartment on EP True Parkway for the smell of marijuana. During the interaction, officers say Miller interfered and was arrested. The Mid Iowa Narcotics Enforcement later conducted a search at his apartment and found two firearms and 27 grams of marijuana. Authorities say a child living in the residence would have had easy access to the items. Miller has been charged with child endangerment, interference with official acts, and more.

Teen to Plead Guilty in Killing of Juvenile Welfare Worker 2025-02-14

A teen, Jovahn Mathis, will plead guilty in adult court to shoving and killing a juvenile welfare worker, Kathleen Galloway-Menke, at a Johnston residential facility last May. Mathis will plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter as a youthful offender, meaning he won't be formally sentenced until he turns 18. Galloway-Menke's daughters delivered impact statements describing their mother as a dedicated worker who had tried to help Mathis. Mathis' case raised concerns about safety at the facility, Ellipsis Iowa, and the state's 'no reject, no eject' policy for youth placements.
