Maupin was intoxicated, damaging property, and had brandished a shotgun in front of his girlfriend and her 3-year-old son. When the deputy responded, Maupin threatened to shoot him and then emerged from the garage with a rifle, ignoring commands to drop the weapon. Maupin advanced toward the deputy, who then fired, killing him. The Attorney General's Office found the deputy's actions were legally justified and no criminal charges will be filed.
