How do you know if you favorite blog is linking to your own blog? Or how many links are pointing at your latest article in one of the directories? Or how many websites link to your own website?
The number of links to a page is one of the most important factors boosting it's search engine rankings.
Here's a coupe of ways you can check the number of links to your website:
#1 Add your website to the Google Webmaster Tools
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en
Yes Google will actually tell you who is linking to your site. You'll also get a lot of useful data on searches where your site show up and how many are clicking through from those searches.
#2 Use the Yahoo Site Explorer
http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=www.secretsearchenginelabs.com&bwm=i&bwmo=&bwmf=u
Yahoo provides a great tool for finding who is linking to your website. It differs from the Google Webmaster Tools in that you will find a lot more links as the Yahoo tool includes links with lower quality. The Yahoo tool also allows you to check who is linking to your competitor something that Google does not allow.
#3 Majestic SEO

This is a commercial link finding tool that can be used to not only find links but also to see the link history of a website, to see how many links are nofollow, how many domains are linking in and other information that can help you evaluate your position on comparison to your competitors.
If you wonder what tool to use, just start with the free Googe Webmaster Tools and Yahoo Site Explorer. When you get more experienced in using link tools Majestic SEO which has both a basic free plan and commercial plans for power users can give you additional power.
The most important thing is that you get more links to your site than what you competitors have and that you use anchor texts(the blue text in the link) that contains the keywords you want to rank for.
