Iowa House Republicans to Scrutinize Higher Education 2024-12-10

Changes could soon be coming to Iowa's colleges and universities. Republicans in the Iowa House say they'll be taking a closer look at higher education in the next session and have created a new Higher Education Committee. The committee is being chaired by R. C., who worked to limit Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs on college campuses. C. says House Republicans plan to make sure Iowa's students are getting a return on their investment and colleges are spending taxpayer money appropriately. They also plan to look at capping how much Iowa colleges can raise tuition each year, with the goal of ensuring students know exactly how much they'll pay across four years.

Two Killed in Muscatine Police Pursuit 2024-12-09

Authorities have identified the two people who died when a car chased by Muscatine police and other agencies collided head-on with another vehicle on Sunday. Police said they received multiple reports about shots being fired from a car on Sunday at around 3:15 p.m. and located the vehicle, but the woman driving it, M., refused to yield, so they pursued her out of the city. M. was involved in the pursuit and was driving a 2021 Nissan Rogue northbound in the southbound lanes on U.S. Highway 218, according to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol. During the pursuit, M. struck a 2017 Ford Explorer head-on, and both M. and the driver of the Ford, A., died. M. had several previous traffic violation charges including speeding and reckless driving, and in June, she allegedly assaulted her mother and took her car without permission.
