Close Up: Iowa native insurance CEO shot in 'brazen' New York ambush 2024-12-08Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare and an Iowa native, was shot and killed in a 'brazen, targeted attack' outside a Manhattan hotel where he was attending an investor conference. The gunman is still at large and the motive is unknown. Thompson, 50, grew up in Hamilton County and was a 1993 graduate of South Hamilton High School, where he was valedictorian and homecoming king. He had worked for more than 20 years at UnitedHealthcare, the last three as CEO. Close Up: Iowa's Safe Haven law changes lead to more babies being surrendered 2024-12-08Changes to Iowa's Safe Haven laws have led to more babies being safely surrendered in the state. The law now allows people to give up their baby anonymously or through a newborn safety device at places staffed 24/7 with first responders. Since the law was expanded in 2023, 22% of all Iowa Safe Haven babies have been surrendered in the last two years. Close Up: Reynolds calls on Congress to pass new Farm Bill 2024-12-08Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and 16 other Republican governors have called on Congress to pass a new five-year Farm Bill. However, Sen. Chuck Grassley says a new Farm Bill is unlikely to happen before the end of the year, and the best that can be hoped for is a one-year extension of the 2018 Farm Bill. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have not been able to come to an agreement on a new five-year bill. |
