She Tucked Her Kids Into Bed In 1976, Then Vanished Into Thin Air 2025-02-09In 1976, Alice Mae Van Alstine, a 28-year-old mother of four living in Polk County, Iowa, mysteriously disappeared after putting her kids to bed on the evening of March 26. She didn't leave with her shoes or coat, and her car was left behind with the door open and keys in the ignition. Her disappearance baffled her family and authorities, as she was known to be a devoted parent. Investigators believe she may have been kidnapped, and her father claimed she had expressed fear of the Minutemen, a right-wing group she had been involved with through her first husband. The police interviewed over 200 people, but the case remains cold, with many of the original investigative records destroyed in a 1993 flood.
