Iowans Raise Concerns Over Allegations of Lutheran 'Money-Laundering Operation' 2025-02-11Some Iowans raised concerns following allegations that Lutheran churches and organizations are using federal grants as a 'money-laundering operation.' Former Trump advisor Michael Flynn called the work by Lutheran churches a 'money-laundering operation' in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. Elon Musk reshared the post, claiming the Department of Government Efficiency team was working to shut down the 'illegal payments.' During a House government efficiency hearing, Rep. Krishnamoorthi questioned Gov. Reynolds about whether she believed Lutheran Family Services or the Lutheran Church were a 'money laundering operation.' Reynolds made multiple attempts to answer the question, at one point saying 'Every program should be looked at, and that's what we're trying to do.' On Feb. 10, Reynolds spoke publicly about the issue, saying 'I absolutely do not think that Lutheran Services is a money laundering organization' and that she supports their work. The Rev. Minna Bothwell, an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, shared a statement defending the Lutheran Church and organizations like Lutheran Services in Iowa, saying they are 'rooted in values of compassion, justice, and service to the most vulnerable in our communities.'
