Dubuque Hempstead Wins First Boys' State Swimming Title 2025-02-16

The boys' state swimming meet in Iowa City showcased exceptional individual talent, with three swimmers - Hayden H. of Iowa City West, Parker M. of Linn-Mar, and Finn M. of Newton - each winning two individual events to share the swimmer of the year award. However, the team of the year was Dubuque Hempstead, which won its first state swim title despite having no individual champions, thanks to strong relay performances and depth in the individual events. Hakes, an Arizona State commit, won the 200 and 500-yard freestyles, while Macho, a Cincinnati commit, bounced back from illness to win the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. The meet highlighted a shift in power, with teams from outside the Central Iowa region making a strong showing.

The Des Moines Police Department arrested one man and seized three guns, including one that was illegally converted to a fully automatic firearm, in connection to a home invasion robbery investigation earlier this week. Officers responded to a residence in the River Bend neighborhood on Monday morning after a report of a robbery, where the resident said an armed person kicked down the front door, fired a shot, and stole property before fleeing. Detectives served a warrant at the suspect's home on Tuesday and recovered the three handguns, one of which had been modified with an illegal 'switch' attachment. The suspect, 21-year-old Vontis K., was arrested and charged with multiple felony offenses.

Dallas County Investigating Rash of Vehicle Burglaries 2025-02-16

The Dallas County Sheriff's office is investigating numerous vehicle burglaries that occurred over the past two weekends. The crimes are believed to be committed by out-of-state individuals and occur overnight and during early morning hours. The suspects target unlocked vehicles and steal electronics, hand and power tools, cash, and credit cards. Law enforcement has increased patrols in residential areas to deter further incidents and identify suspects. Residents are encouraged to lock their vehicles and residences, remove valuables from vehicles, and report any suspicious out-of-state vehicles or activity to law enforcement.
