Iowa Warns of Jury Duty Phone Scam 2025-02-08

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is warning of a jury duty phone scam, where scammers have been calling Iowans and pretending to be with the Polk County Sheriff's Office. The scammers tell the victims that they have missed jury duty and threaten to arrest or fine them if they don't comply. Bird and Polk County Sheriff Kevin Schneider both advise Iowans to be wary of these scams, as law enforcement will never call and request money for missing jury duty or any other legal matter. Iowans are encouraged to verify the source of any such calls and to contact the Attorney General's office if they suspect a scam.

Fennimore Man Arrested After Disturbance at Church 2025-02-07

A disturbance at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fennimore, Wisconsin led to the arrest of A. Peterson, 38, on Thursday. Peterson was causing a scene and demanding to speak with a priest, and when deputies arrived, he was found to be agitated and shouting profanities. He refused to identify himself and threw metal candle holders, nearly striking a deputy. Despite commands to comply, Peterson resisted arrest, leading to the use of a taser by deputies. He was eventually handcuffed after further resistance and suffered a head injury after falling from a raised area. He was taken to Grant Regional Health Center for treatment, and the Grant County District Attorney's Office is considering charges of disorderly conduct and resisting an officer.
