The accused shooter, Demonie Smith, later turned himself in but claimed he acted in self-defense, citing alleged threats from unidentified individuals who exited Shanice's vehicle. However, police and witness statements, including Shanice's sister's account, contradicted Smith's claim, showing clear evidence that there were no other individuals involved. Smith is being held in the Polk County Jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond. Use of Force Iowa Deputies Cleared in Custody Death of Willie Earl Washington 2025-03-12 The Iowa Attorney General's Office has cleared two Black Hawk County Deputies and one Bremer County Deputy for their use of force in a December incident that resulted in the death of Willie Earl Washington while in custody. Washington led deputies on a high-speed chase in excess of 120 mph, and when deputies got him out of the vehicle, they placed two pairs of handcuffs on him due to his size. While he was laying face down on the ground, he told officers he couldn't breathe. When deputies turned Washington to his side, he was unresponsive. The cause of death was determined to be a combination of cardiorespiratory arrest, an enlarged heart, obesity, methamphetamine use and positioning. Shooting Des Moines Man Arrested for Shooting Woman with AR-15 Rifle 2025-03-12 Demonie Smith, an 18-year-old Des Moines man, has been jailed in connection with a Prospect Park neighborhood shooting Monday night that seriously injured a woman. Smith used an AR-15 rifle to shoot a 32-year-old woman in the 2600 block of Boston Avenue. The victim drove herself to Broadlawns Medical Center, and her vehicle was hit seven times. As part of the investigation, a search warrant was executed in a South Central Des Moines neighborhood where several firearms were seized. Smith turned himself in about 13 hours after the shooting. The investigation into the shooting continues. |
