Iowa Faces Shortage of Indigent Defense Attorneys 2025-03-05

Iowa's indigent defense system is facing a crisis, with a shortage of contract attorneys and public defenders leading to long delays in criminal cases and defendants not receiving a speedy trial. The number of contract attorneys has decreased by almost 50% between 2014 and 2023, and the pay rates for these attorneys are not keeping up with the cost of doing the work. This has led to widespread burnout and attrition, with many attorneys leaving the state for higher-paying jobs. The issue is particularly acute in rural counties, where there are only two to three contract attorneys in some areas. Lawmakers are working to address the problem, including proposing bills to increase pay and incentivize attorneys to work in rural areas.
