Iowa Lawmakers Consider Bills to Prohibit Unauthorized Camping on Public Lands 2025-03-06

Legislation in the Iowa House and Senate would prohibit unauthorized camping on public lands, a move advocates for people experiencing homelessness argue would 'criminalize homelessness.' The bills would establish a misdemeanor charge for individuals who refuse to leave after a warning when sleeping or camping on public land without authorization. Advocates for people experiencing homelessness decried the bills as an attempt to 'criminalize homelessness' that would exacerbate difficult conditions unsheltered Iowans already face. The bills would allow cities and counties to use public funds to establish designated areas on public property for public camping by people experiencing homelessness.

Iowa Bill Would Criminalize Law Enforcement for Refusing to Comply with Immigration Detainers 2025-03-06

Any Iowa law enforcement officer who refuses to comply with federal immigration detainer requests would be guilty of a felony under legislation advanced by Republican members of an Iowa House subcommittee. The bill would make it a Class D felony for law enforcement officers, including county sheriffs, to 'knowingly and intentionally' fail to comply with federal immigration officers. Officers, sheriffs and deputies convicted of the offense would also lose their certification from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. The bill is intended to ensure public safety and prevent tragedies involving immigrants not authorized to be in the country.
