T. Thakadipuram, a western Iowa priest, is accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the church he served. Thakadipuram is charged with six counts of first-degree theft and one count of second-degree theft. Court records allege that on Jan. 2, Thakadipuram went to three different banks, where he allegedly removed seven certificates of deposits, or CDs, belonging to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah and deposited the money into a bank account for a fake missionary group. He's then accused of transferring the money from the fake missionary group account to his personal account, totaling $164,000. Thakadipuram has pleaded not guilty, and the Diocese of Des Moines has arranged for the pastoral care of the parishioners until a new priest is placed.

Iowa Bill to Lower Handgun Purchase Age Advances 2025-03-07

Legislation that would lower Iowa's minimum age to purchase a handgun from 21 to 18 has advanced out of the House Judiciary Committee. Lawmakers voted 17-4 to move House Study Bill 280 forward. Currently, 18-year-olds can purchase long guns in Iowa, and there are also occupation-based exceptions for those ages 18 to 20. Critics of the legislation argue that lowering the age requirement could increase gun violence and suicides among young adults, while supporters say the current law infringes on Second Amendment rights. The bill will now move forward for consideration by the full House.
