Central Indiana electric companies issue energy-saving tips as high temps continue
After a brief relief over the weekend, Indianapolis' heat wave is expected to continue into this week. With the high temperatures come concerns about Indiana's power capacity, according to a recent report from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation. The report stated that the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, or MISO, a power grid operator for all or part of 15 states, including Indiana, was facing capacity shortfalls in the North and Central regions, "resulting in high risk of energy emergencies during peak summer conditions.
"As the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts increased odds of above-normal temperatures for June, July and August 2022, Indiana is already seeing high temperatures through a recent heat wave, with temperatures in the 90s and heat indices in the 100s. Kacie Hoover, meteorologist for NWS Indianapolis, said temperatures are expected to get back up this week, with projected heat indices of over 100."Current weather forecasts for the week of June 20 indicate extreme high temperatures across the MISO Footprint," Brandon Morris, strategic communications adviser for MISO, said in an email to IndyStar. "Current Load forecasts are near or exceed all-time peaks. Maintaining generation availability and transfer capabilities across the footprint will be critical."
