N. Sanders lost her son, R. Lewis, in 2008 and later lost her grandson, R. Carr, in 2023. Sanders's son, R. Lewis, was shot and killed at a party in Des Moines in 2008. In 2023, her grandson R. Carr, who was just 16 at the time, was also shot and killed while attending school at Starts Right Here, an education center for at-risk youth. Sanders said after two tragedies, she's tired and wants to see gun violence stop. The man who shot and killed R. Carr, P. Walls, is currently serving a 65-year prison sentence, and the man who murdered R. Carr's father, J. Winfrey, is serving a life sentence.
