Iowa Sees Spike in School Threat Reports, Officials Urge Caution on Social Media 2024-09-20

The Governor's School Safety Bureau in Iowa is reporting a significant increase in the number of tips received through the state's anonymous school threat reporting system, Safe and Sound. In the last month, the bureau has received 55 reports of potential school violence or intent to harm, compared to just 10 reports at this time last year. Experts say the social media aspect of these threats is accelerating the spread of misinformation and causing increased stress on communities. The bureau is urging Iowans to report any threats directly to local law enforcement and school officials, rather than reposting them on social media.
