Proposed Bill to Enhance Penalties for Groping Faces Roadblock in Iowa Legislature 2025-02-23

A proposed bill to enhance penalties for someone groping another's intimate areas has hit a roadblock with lawmakers in Iowa, leaving prosecutors scratching their heads as to why this bill has received so much pushback. Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks, who proposed this change a few years ago, explains that the current law treats groping as a simple misdemeanor, and the proposed law would make it a serious misdemeanor with up to one year in jail. Maybanks believes this would give more teeth to the punishment and provide an opportunity for offenders to seek treatment or be placed on probation. However, some lawmakers have expressed concerns that this could lead to 'horseplay' being prosecuted and potentially trigger sex offender registry requirements. The bill has passed the Senate subcommittee but faces issues in the House, and Maybanks is hopeful that if it gets to the floor, it will pass.

Rising Violence Against U.S. Healthcare Workers Poses Challenge 2025-02-24

A man who took hostages in a Pennsylvania hospital during a shooting that killed a police officer and wounded five other people highlights the rising violence against U.S. healthcare workers and the challenge of protecting them. The attack also left a doctor, nurse, custodian and two other officers wounded. Healthcare and social assistance employees suffered almost three-quarters of nonfatal attacks on workers in the private sector in 2020 and 2021 for a rate more than five times the national average, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Recent attacks on U.S. healthcare workers include a man shooting two correction officers in the ambulance bay of an Idaho hospital while freeing a white supremacist gang member before he could be returned to prison, a gunman killing a security guard and wounding a hospital worker in a Portland, Oregon, hospital's maternity unit, and a man opening fire in a medical center waiting room in Atlanta, killing one woman and wounding four.
