Iowa Labor Day Parade Highlights Concerns Over Tariffs and Workers' RightsSeptember 2, 2025Des Moines' annual Labor Day parade celebrated Iowa's workers. But this year's holiday also brings questions for American labor. 'It doesn't matter whether you're Republican or you're Democrat, it matters whether or not you support labor and the workers and the rights of those workers,' said M. S., AFSCME 61 union member. President Donald Trump says he's focusing his first year in office on home grown manufacturing, imposing tariffs on countries like China, India, and Mexico. But the tariffs also bring uncertainty, 'We're always in support of more goods being made here in the United States,' said S. 'But we're also smart enough to understand that you just don't turn a factory back on overnight.' Economists warn consumers could feel the effects of tariffs, and union members agree. 'What is happening is those costs are being passed on to the consumers. And those are the workers, those are the people here today walking,' S. added. Warnings About Abusive Gymnastics Coach Went Unheeded for YearsSeptember 2, 2025Long before his banishment from gymnastics and arrest after accusations he abused girls he coached, warning signs about S. G. were coming from several directions — his former boss, his gymnasts and their parents. The former boss says she brought her concerns about G.'s 'grooming' behavior to USA Gymnastics, the sport's national governing body. The parents and girls described telling coaches of inappropriate behavior at G.'s new job, an academy that produced Olympians and is owned by renowned coach L. 'C.' Q. Yet Q. not only kept G. on the job — he promoted him. Concerns about G.'s behavior in the gym began soon after, yet G. was consistently given more responsibility. Girls in one training group pushed for other adults to intervene, which resulted in a 2019 meeting between parents and Q. But not long after that meeting, C.'s Gymnastics promoted G. in January 2020 to head coach of a key girls' team.
