EPA Adds Iowa River Segments to Impaired Waters List 2024-11-21

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has submitted its list of impaired bodies of water to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has added segments of the Des Moines, Raccoon, Cedar, Iowa, and South Skunk Rivers to the list. The EPA noted that the DNR did not take all scientific information and data into account, leading to the addition of these river segments. The impairment is due to high levels of nitrate and nitrite, which are toxic to humans. While the drinking water from these rivers is currently safe, the quality of the water could raise consumer costs in the future. The EPA is asking for public comment on the issue until December 13th, and the list will be finalized and given back to the state for action.
