Des Moines Police Release Body Cam Footage of Fatal Shooting 2025-02-18

The Des Moines Police Department has released two full body camera videos documenting an incident last month in which two officers shot at and killed an armed suspect. Police shot and killed Charquan Hargrove, 32, on Jan. 2 at a home in the 2100 block of Meadow Court. Authorities say he was wanted for domestic abuse and firearm warrants. In the video, police officers Nicholas Rude and Brian Stern enter the home, telling a woman who answered the door that they have reason to believe Hargrove is inside. The woman tells officers Hargrove is not in the house and that it is just her and her children. That's when Hargrove can be seen running from one bedroom to another at the opposite end of a hallway. Officer Rude chases after Hargrove and asks to see his hands. Hargrove tells Rude to back up and then points his weapon at the officer. Gunfire goes back and forth before Rude retreats to another bedroom and reloads his weapon. Moments later, the woman runs in to protect her child, which is also in the room with Rude. Hargrove follows her, and that's when Rude shoots him several times — ultimately killing him. In total, four people were in the room when Officers Rude and Stern fired their weapons. DMPD says they both had a good line of sight not to hit the woman or the child. Officer Rude shot 17 times, Officer Stern shot nine times, Hargrove fired four times at police. Both the Polk County Attorney's Office and Iowa Attorney General's Office have cleared the officers of wrongdoing.

Man Sentenced to 35 Years for Killing Cousin in Des Moines 2025-02-18

A man who previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and first-degree burglary in a 2024 Des Moines case, was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Tuesday, the Polk County Attorney's Office said. According to the sentence delivered by the district judge, 19-year-old Martavius Lamon Green must serve at least 10 years before he is eligible for parole. Green, formerly of Atlanta, accepted a plea agreement in January, admitting to killing his cousin 21-year-old Tariq Reynolds last fall. Following a dispute over marijuana in his aunt's Des Moines home, where he was living at the time, Green began an altercation with Reynolds, according to reports. Reynolds then put Green in a 'bear hug' and the two fell over with Reynolds landing on top of Green. Green then reportedly shot Reynolds, who was unarmed, twice, ultimately killing him.

Iowa Bill Would Criminalize Taking Minors to Drag Shows 2025-02-18

Iowa House Republicans advanced a bill that would make it a felony to take a minor to a drag show. LGBTQ advocates argue the bill's definition of 'drag show' is overly broad and could infringe upon the rights of transgender individuals. Proponents of the bill argue it is necessary to 'protect children' from 'sexually themed performances.' The bill defines a drag show as a performance primarily where the performer 'exhibits a gender identity that is different than the performer's gender assigned at birth' by their clothing, makeup, accessories or other features. The prohibition applies whether the performer sings, lip-syncs, dances, reads or 'performs for entertainment,' regardless of whether they receive payment. A person over age 18 who knowingly brings a minor to a drag show would be guilty of a class 'D' felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine between $1,025 and $10,245 under the legislation.
