Former Iowa Gymnastics Coach Accused of Sexually Exploiting Underage Girls 2025-08-21Prosecutors and federal investigators are seeking more leads about a former West Des Moines gymnastics coach now accused of sexually exploiting underage girls in multiple states. Sean Michael Gardner, who worked as a coach from 2018 to 2022 at Iowa's famed Chow's Gymnastics and Dance Institute, is now facing child pornography charges over allegations that, at a previous coaching job in Mississippi, he used hidden cameras to capture hundreds of images and videos of young gymnasts in various states of undress. The FBI has said in court filings the images were discovered after a young gymnast at Chow's, known for training Olympic champions including Shawn Johnson, reported she believed Gardner had used his phone to record her in inappropriate positions. At least two Iowa gymnasts have made reports about Gardner, including alleged inappropriate touching in the guise of stretching and helping spot them for their routines, but no charges have yet been filed in the state. Investigators are casting a wider net, and the Polk County Attorney's Office has shared a link on Facebook to an FBI web page soliciting information related to Gardner. Iowa Attorney General Warns Seniors About Scams and Fraud 2025-08-21Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is cautioning older residents about scams and fraud that specifically target them. Scammers often exploit seniors' kindness by posing as family members in need or falsely claiming legal trouble to extract money. 'As attorney general, my goal is to protect Iowans from criminals who exploit and take their hard-earned money,' said Attorney General Bird. 'Scammers are smart and know when people are most vulnerable. I urge older Iowans to be cautious. If you think you are being scammed, contact my office for assistance.' The attorney general's office hosts regular 'Stop the Scammers' events to educate the public. At a June event, Lynne Caltrider discovered she was a victim of fraud. An ongoing investigation has resulted in several arrests, and Bird's office managed to recover some of the funds she lost. Caltrider was honored with the Meritorious Service Award in July for her efforts in aiding the investigation. |
