Crime Iowa Launches Redesigned Sex Offender Registry Website 2025-08-22 The Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) has launched a redesigned Sex Offender Registry (SOR) website. The updated site enhances user experience, improves functionality, and continues to provide Iowans with critical tools and resources to access information on registered sex offenders. The website introduces new features aimed at making it easier and more efficient for users to find the information they need, including homepage links to active registrants and most wanted registrants, enhanced search functions, interactive maps, personalized notifications, and links to helpful crime prevention and safety information. Shooting Iowa Attorney General Finds Fatal Shooting by Toledo Police Justified 2025-08-22 The Iowa Attorney General's Office has determined that the fatal shooting of L. Kurth by a Toledo Police Department officer on July 5 was legally justified. The investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation found that Kurth, who was reportedly on methamphetamine and intoxicated, had a handgun and expressed suicidal intentions. When officers located Kurth, he advanced on them, pointing a gun and ignoring commands to drop it. Despite pleas to surrender, Kurth told officers to shoot him, and Lt. Nathan Wunn of the Toledo Police Department fired when Kurth came dangerously close, resulting in Kurth's death. Kurth had a history of mental health and substance abuse issues. Murder Somali National Pleads Guilty to Kidnapping Woman Whose Body Was Found in Missouri 2025-08-22 A Somali national living in southwest Missouri, M. Mahamed, has pleaded guilty in federal court to kidnapping a woman, J.M., whose body was found in a roadside ditch near Noel in 2019. Mahamed admitted to kidnapping J.M., who was last seen alive on July 16, 2019, after calling 911 to report that Mahamed had held her at knifepoint and attempted to sexually assault her. J.M.'s children, then ages 4, 2, and 6 months, were later found abandoned at a residence in Des Moines, Iowa, and placed in state custody. Mahamed fled the United States after leaving the children and was a fugitive until Guatemalan officials expelled him back to the U.S. on July 27, 2021. He faces up to life in federal prison without parole. |
