Democrat Pulls Off Surprise Victory in Iowa Senate Special Election 2025-01-31In a surprising turn of events, Democrat Mike Z. defeated Republican nominee Katie W. in the special election for Iowa Senate district 35. Most political observers expected the Republicans to hold the seat easily, as the district has a GOP voter registration advantage and has favored Republican candidates in recent elections. However, Z. performed well in every part of the district, carrying Clinton County, where most of his constituents live, and nearly matching his opponent in the Scott County portion of the district. The Democrat's victory in this low-turnout special election is seen as an impressive feat, as he was able to overcome the district's Republican leanings and secure a win.
