Trump Pardons 9 Iowans Charged in Jan. 6 Capitol Attack 2025-01-22

One of President Donald Trump's first actions in the White House was to pardon 1,500 people charged in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, including nine Iowans. The pardon mandates the release of those currently in prison and essentially wipes away their convictions, according to a legal expert. However, those who had to pay fines or legal fees will not be reimbursed. The unusual move comes early in a president's term, as pardons can generate political blowback.

Laken Riley Act, 'Sarah's Law' Headed to Trump's Desk 2025-01-22

The Laken Riley Act, which requires U.S. immigration officials to take custody of undocumented immigrants who commit theft-related crimes, is heading to President Donald Trump's desk following a final congressional vote. An amendment championed by Iowa's Republican delegation and written in memory of Sarah Root, a Council Bluffs woman killed in 2016, was also included. The amendment will require the detention of undocumented immigrants who commit crimes that result in death or serious bodily injury. Iowa Republicans have been pushing for these changes, calling the proposed bill 'Sarah's Law', since Root's death.

Proposed Amendment to Allow Child Victims to Testify Without Facing Abusers Advances in Iowa 2025-01-22

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird's proposed amendment to the state constitution that would allow child crime victims to give testimony without facing their alleged abusers in court was pushed forward, but lawmakers have concerns. The bill passed in a House subcommittee, with some lawmakers supporting the concept but grappling with issues of constitutionality and fairness. The Iowa Supreme Court had previously ruled that it is unconstitutional for children to testify against their alleged abusers without confronting them in person in court. Advocates say the proposal would protect children, while criminal defense groups argue it violates the due-process rights of the accused.
