Des Moines Metro Postal Workers Demand $30 Minimum Wage and Better Protections Amid Mail Crimes 2025-02-17Postal workers in the Des Moines metro area are calling for a $30 minimum wage and better protections after recent incidents of mail crime. Union members have gone over 600 days without a contract since the last one expired in 2023, and they recently rejected a new contract proposed by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) leadership. The workers want their contract to include better protections for postal carriers, who have faced crimes such as a postal carrier van being stolen in Des Moines and a mailbox being broken into in Clive. They are also asking for higher pay, as current wages are making it difficult to attract new applicants, putting a greater strain on the existing workforce. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and USPS leadership have until Tuesday to come to an agreement, or the discussions will enter the interest arbitration phase where a neutral party will decide on a resolution. Waukee Man Sentenced to 32 Years in Federal Prison for Nationwide Bank Fraud and Money Laundering Scheme 2025-02-16A Waukee man named Stephan Rashad Haley, also known as 'Ace' and 'Bosh,' was sentenced to 32 years in federal prison for his involvement in a nationwide bank fraud and money laundering scheme that impacted 8 Iowa banks. Haley was found guilty of fraud, money laundering, and fentanyl distribution, and was responsible for a multi-million dollar fraud scheme he orchestrated in 2023. The indictment alleged that at least 12 businesses and 14 banks were impacted across the nation, with the participants trying to deposit at least $10 million worth of stolen checks and securing at least $2.1 million. Haley is believed to have recruited at least three other individuals to open fraudulent bank accounts and deposit stolen checks, and the conspiracies he helped execute allegedly generated a loss of over $3.5 million to more than 10 victims. Court documents also show Haley obtained and distributed counterfeit pills containing fentanyl and was involved in a 2023 shooting in West Des Moines. Iowa's Doctor Shortage and the Contradictions of 'Intellectual Freedom' 2025-02-16The Republican-led Iowa Legislature's continuing efforts to 'play doctor' has landed Iowa near the bottom of the nation's doctor per capita and doctor retention lists. The introduction of new legislation to ease the effects of this crisis, which is of lawmakers' own making, seeks to only treat the symptoms and not cure the disease. The irony is that while the Iowa Republicans propose to establish a 'School of Intellectual Freedom' at the University of Iowa, they also want state universities to require new general education courses that can't 'include any curriculum or other material that teaches identity politics or is based on theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, or privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States of America or the state of Iowa.' This contradicts the idea of intellectual freedom. |
