Plummeting balance in federal crime victims fund sparks alarm among states, advocates 2024-10-07

Funding for victim services in Washington state is projected to be cut in half before the end of next year, as the main funding source, the Victims of Crime Act State Plan, has seen a steady decline in federal dollars. The Department of Commerce, which oversees the state Office of Crime Victims Advocacy, is requesting $51 million for the 2025-2027 biennium to keep funding steady. If the state doesn't provide more funding, more than 140 organizations that provide services for victims of crimes like domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse could face financial difficulties. The state is considering a legislative solution similar to Maryland's Victim Services Stabilization Act, which requires the state to kick in enough to maintain a $60 million aggregate for victim services programs.
