Protecting Your Home and Packages from Burglars and Porch Pirates This Holiday Season 2024-12-22

Burglars and porch pirates are the busiest during the holiday season when homeowners are traveling and Christmas presents are being delivered. To protect your home while traveling, put lights on a timer, arrange for snow removal, and have a trusted neighbor or friend check on your house and pick up any mail or packages. To protect your packages, sign up for delivery notifications, require a signature for delivery, have a friend or neighbor pick up a package, and install cameras to catch any porch pirates. Sergeant Paul Parizek with the Des Moines Police Department said package theft increases during the holidays.

Skimming Criminals Target SNAP Benefits, Stealing Millions from Vulnerable Families 2024-12-21

Skimming criminals are using hidden devices on card readers to steal SNAP electronic benefit transfer card information, targeting families and older adults who depend on these benefits to survive. California has been hit especially hard, with some $5 million in SNAP food assistance stolen each month. The Central Valley has been deeply affected, with data revealing that criminals have stolen approximately $3.6 million in food benefits across several counties. Congress must act now to ensure a permanent extension of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's authority to replace stolen food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to protect the victims of these crimes.
