Homelessness Crisis Deepens in Iowa and Across the U.S. 2024-12-28

Homelessness in the United States surged by 18.1% this year, the sharpest recorded increase in decades, as housing shortages, inflation, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated an already dire crisis. According to an annual U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) report, more than 770,000 people experienced homelessness on a single night in January—an increase of over 100,000 from the previous year. In Iowa, the numbers are equally troubling, with a 56% rise in the state's unsheltered population since 2023. Boni F., a University of Iowa graduate who now moves between Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and Las Vegas, is one of many who exemplify the human face of this crisis locally. Her story underscores the challenges behind the statistics, including heightened risks of violence and stigma faced by the homeless population.

Neighbors Shocked by Murder-Suicide in Des Moines 2024-12-27

After living next door for more than a decade, James Creek of E. 40th Avenue walked out his front door to see one of his neighbors shot, the other dead in a murder-suicide. On Wednesday evening, Des Moines police responded to reports of gunfire on E. 40th Court. The department said a man shot a woman in a domestic dispute before shooting and killing himself. The woman later died in the hospital. Before shots were fired, Creek said his family heard arguing at his neighbor's home. His wife then went outside to investigate the commotion and saw a man strike a woman. Since then, Creek said the incident has shaken him because he was unaware the person living next door was capable of such violence.
