Iowa Should Not Assist in Mass Deportations 2024-12-29Iowa's governor should reconsider her support for President-elect Trump's plans to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, as involving state police and National Guard in such efforts could make the situation even more chaotic and problematic. While the governors' statement pledges to target 'dangerous criminals, gang members, and terrorists,' the reality is that many law-abiding immigrants could also face harassment, detention, and removal, which would be a humanitarian crisis. The governor should reserve the use of the National Guard for conventional needs like disaster relief, and leave immigration enforcement to federal agents.
