Iowa Bill Targets Companies that Laid Off Over 1,500 Workers 2025-03-19Iowa lawmakers are considering a bill, HSB 306, that would require businesses to pay back state tax credits if they lay off a significant number of employees. The bill targets companies that laid off more than 1,500 workers in 2024, requiring them to repay half of the funds they received through Iowa's Research Activities Tax Credit. Deere and Co., a major Iowa employer, would be directly affected by the legislation, as the company laid off approximately 1,600 workers last year. Iowa Senate Passes Hands-Free Driving Bill 2025-03-19The Iowa Senate passed a hands-free bill with almost unanimous support, which would further limit phone use to hands-free only while driving. Iowa already has a no texting and driving law, and this bill would take it a step further to require drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and not on their phones. Iowa House Passes Bills to Limit Diversity Efforts at Colleges 2025-03-19Iowa House Republicans passed a series of bills aimed at further curtailing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programming across Iowa's public and private universities. The bills would expand a 2024 law barring public universities from spending on DEI efforts to include Iowa's community colleges, bar private colleges and universities that participate in the Iowa Tuition Grant program from having, establishing or staffing a DEI office, and prohibit the Iowa Board of Regents from requiring DEI or critical race theory courses to graduate, among other measures. Democrats have criticized the legislation as harmful and misguided efforts that will reverse progress on accessibility and create new barriers to opportunity. |
