Iowa Lawmakers Take Action on Human Trafficking and Smuggling 2025-03-30The Iowa House has passed two bills aimed at addressing human trafficking and smuggling. One bill removes the requirement of an ongoing relationship for someone to be charged with human trafficking, while the other bill makes human smuggling a state crime. The bills were prompted by a recent lawsuit filed by six Guatemalans who say they were recruited to work at an egg processing facility in Clarion, then threatened with a gun and deportation for complaining about overtime work and pay. The bills now move to the Senate for consideration. Des Moines Teenager Charged After High-Speed Pursuit in Clay County 2025-03-30An 18-year-old Des Moines teenager, Donnie Bensley, was charged after leading Clay County deputies on a pursuit that turned into a grass fire on March 29, 2025. Bensley reportedly failed to follow the deputy's orders, sparking a pursuit that reached speeds above 100 mph. The pursuit ended when deputies performed a PIT maneuver, causing the car to enter a ditch and come to a stop in a DNR wetland area. The heat from the car ignited a grass fire. Bensley has been charged with possession of stolen property, eluding, reckless driving, and other traffic infractions. Plane Crash in Minnesota Suburb 2025-03-29A small plane traveling from Iowa crashed in a Minneapolis, Minnesota, suburb on March 29, 2025. The SOCATA TBM7 plane crashed around 12:20 p.m. in a residential area in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. The plane departed from Des Moines International Airport and was headed to Anoka County-Blaine Airport in Minneapolis. There were no survivors of the crash, but the number of passengers is unknown. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash. |
