45-year-old C. Markley, an Ames nurse practitioner and business owner, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for 15 counts of sex trafficking. Markley used fraud and coercion to engage in sex acts with dozens of teenage boys and young men, as well as a few young women, from 2001 to 2023. He leveraged his positions to gain the trust of his victims before grooming and repeatedly abusing them, falsely claiming the acts were for research purposes. The investigation began in December 2022 after Ames police received a complaint about physicals administered to young boys without parental consent.

A group of Iowa House and Senate Republicans aired their opposition to the taking of private land for carbon dioxide pipelines and urged both chambers to pass restrictions. The lawmakers want to preserve property rights and put more guard rails around the use of eminent domain. Republican Rep. Blaine Watkins, 23, was sworn in as the newest and youngest member of the Iowa House on Monday after winning a special election in March to fill a seat left vacant by former Rep. Martin Graber, who died from a heart attack in January. Watkins most previously worked as a clerk and secretary for Sen. Jeff Reichman, R-Montrose, and lives on his family farm outside of Donnellson.
