New Iowa Laws Address Weapons, Gift Card Fraud, and Adoptions 2025-04-19Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed a dozen bills into law, including one that lowers the minimum age to carry or possess weapons from 21 to 18. However, people under 21 still can't purchase handguns or ammunition from licensed dealers under federal law, and they can't carry pistols or revolvers under the new Iowa law. Another law makes gift card fraud a crime, with the most severe penalties coming from gift card fraud schemes or spending with fraudulent gift card money. A third law makes some adoption proceedings easier, allowing a judge to waive the pre-placement investigation requirement in certain cases. Court Finds Iowa Judge Unrepentant, Removes from Bench 2025-04-18An Iowa magistrate judge, David Hanson, has been removed from his position due to misconduct and a lack of remorse. Hanson dismissed a teen sexual assault case, citing his own teenage experiences and making inappropriate comments. He also used an ethnic slur in court against a Hispanic defendant, claiming ignorance of its derogatory nature. The Supreme Court found Hanson 'simply and unalterably unsuited to be a judge' and removed him from the bench, citing his 'complete lack of self-awareness and contrition' when questioned about his actions. Simpson College President Jay Byers Dies at 54 2025-04-18Jay Byers, the president of Simpson College in Indianola, has died at age 54. Byers, a 1993 graduate of the college, had been president at Simpson since July 2023. Prior to that, he was the CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. The college's Board of Trustees Chair Terry Handley said a wellness check was conducted at the president's residence, where Byers was found deceased. The Indianola chief of police said Byers' death is currently under investigation, but authorities do not believe a criminal act contributed to his death. |
