Deputy Justified in Shooting Armed Man in Harlan 2025-04-23A Shelby County Sheriff's Office deputy who shot and killed an armed man in March was justified in using lethal force, the Iowa Attorney General's Office said. Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office conducted a welfare check at the Harlan home around 4:30 a.m. on March 6 after a caller reported his friend had posted a 'concerning message' on social media. The message showed an arm with blood around it. When the deputy arrived, he found P., 36, of Harlan, intoxicated in his garage while there appeared to be blood in the snow on the driveway. P. was holding a rifle and refused to put it down. After half an hour of negotiations, P. pointed his rifle at the deputy, and another deputy shot and killed him. Deputies later found the body of P.'s girlfriend, A. M., 31, who had been shot five times in the back and legs, stripped of her clothes, washed and placed in the trunk area of an SUV. Iowa Secretary of State Warns of Scam Coal Company 2025-04-23Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate has issued a warning about a scam coal company called World Trade Coal (WTC) that is soliciting investments from Iowans. The company is presenting a fraudulent 'letter of surety' to investors that deceptively uses Pate's signature and the official seal of the Iowa Secretary of State's office. Pate has stated that the certificate is counterfeit and has not been approved or issued by his office. The matter has been handed over to the Iowa Attorney General's office for investigation, and Iowans are encouraged to verify the legitimacy of any documents they receive and report any issues to the Consumer Protection Division. |
