Altoona Man Faces Charges for Alleged Sexual Abuse of Children 2025-04-28An Altoona man faces charges in two separate cases after police say he sexually abused at least two children. Police say 70-year-old Michael Ertz was arrested in West Des Moines on Thursday. According to court documents, nearly 10 years ago, Ertz allegedly sexually abused a girl who was four years old at the start of the abuse. He has pleaded not guilty. He's since been released from jail. In a separate case, Ertz is accused of sexually abusing another girl under the age of 12 in Polk County. A plea hearing in that case is set for May 9. New AARP Iowa State Director Focuses on Livable Communities, Caregiving, and Fraud Prevention 2025-04-27During more than two decades in community development, M. Wagler sometimes worked with AARP in Iowa on housing, walkability and accessibility for senior Iowans. That experience proved to be a bridge for Wagler, who in November — after more than 20 years working with the state's Main Street Iowa economic development program — was named AARP's new Iowa state director. Among AARP's main priorities are 'livable communities' and family caregiving, which is an area in which he has personal experience, having been a caregiver for his parents. Another AARP priority this year is financial security, including scam and fraud. AARP Iowa has partnered with the Iowa Attorney General's Office and the Iowa Department of Insurance and Financial Services on a 'Stop the Scammers' tour. Some Vulnerable Republicans Avoid Constituents During Recess 2025-04-27Some swing-district conservatives didn't use the 17-day recess to speak with constituents, limiting any exposure to the potential backlash from Trump's actions. Many days over the past two weeks, no one answered the phone at any of U.S. Rep. Scott Perry's four offices. Perry's team did not share details about the Republican congressman's public appearances until they were over. Even supporters who live in Perry's central Pennsylvania district could not remember the last time he hosted an in-person town hall. The U.S. House is ending a 17-day recess, typically known as a district work period, in which members of Congress return home to focus on their constituents. But some of the most vulnerable Republicans limited their potential exposure to the potential backlash from President Donald Trump's first months in office. |
