Indianola man pleads guilty to attempted murder, kidnapping of former girlfriend 2025-07-25

A Polk County judge sentenced Jordan Blake Mangum to up to 45 years in prison Friday for attempted murder and kidnapping a former girlfriend. Mr. Mangum must serve at least at least 22½ years before he is eligible for parole under a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty June 23. Judge Joseph Seidlin sentenced Mr. Mangum's co-defendant, Jessica Ann Marie Wheeler, to up to 35 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 17½ years. She was sentenced Thursday. Evidence showed that on Dec. 2, 2023, the defendants entered the home of Luna Cox on the southeast side of Des Moines, bound her hands with duct tape, and forced her into a minivan, and took her to Mr. Mangum home in Indianola, where he tied her up. Ms. Cox was taken to an unknown location, strangled, ran over several times with the van, and her throat was slashed. She pleaded with Mr. Mangum to stop, and he dropped her off at the Clarke County Hospital at 8 p.m. Two weeks before the incident, Mr. Mangum had been arrested and charged with domestic abuse, second offense, after Ms. Cox was assaulted. She said the defendants attacked her on Dec. 2 to pressure her to drop the case, and when she refused, their acts escalated.

New producer takes over Des Moines 48 Hour Film Project 2025-07-25

The 48 Hour Film Project of Des Moines has been a staple in the city's film scene for decades. But this weekend marks a change for many filmmaking teams who have regularly participated in the annual competition. The city's longtime producer, Sam Pace-Tuomi, will not be kicking things off as usual. Last fall, Pace-Tuomi retired from the role after more than 15 years of serving off-and-on as the city producer. When he stepped down, many worried that 48 Hour would fade away without Pace-Tuomi's leadership. As longstanding partners and supporters of the local film community, the folks at Fleur Cinema & Café were not going to let that happen. With no clear successor in sight, Chris Kottman stepped up to the plate. Kottman is the assistant booker and events coordinator for Fridley Theatres, which operates the Fleur Cinema in Des Moines. He said making sure that the project carried on was his main priority.
