Law Iowa's 'Fetal Heartbeat Law' Leads to Significant Drop in Abortions 2025-07-30 Abortions that are recorded with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services fell by more than half in the year since the state's 'Fetal Heartbeat Law' has been in effect. The law bans abortions after doctors can detect cardiac activity, which typically occurs around six weeks of pregnancy. Dr. Emily Boevers, an obstetrician/gynecologist in Waverly, said that the law takes away health care options, forces women to leave the state for the procedure, and discourages medical professionals from practicing in the state. Governor Kim Reynolds, a Republican, praised the law's ability to significantly limit abortions in the state. Shooting Arrest Made in Deadly Des Moines Shooting 2025-07-29 Des Moines police have made an arrest in an overnight deadly shooting. Amarianna Findley-Murry, 19, of Des Moines, has been charged with persons ineligible to carry dangerous weapons, a serious misdemeanor. Investigators say Findley-Murry shot 47-year-old Pleasant Hill resident Terry B. during a dispute and a handgun has been recovered. The incident remains under investigation. Findley-Murry has also been charged with other offenses that are unrelated to this investigation. Theft Des Moines Sees Rise in Vehicle Thefts, Kia and Hyundai Models Targeted 2025-07-29 While car thefts declined nationally in 2024, Des Moines reported a 4% increase compared to 2023. More than 1,000 vehicles were stolen in the capital city in 2024, according to data from the Des Moines Police Department. Police attribute some of the increase to juveniles following online trends like the 'KIA BOYS.' The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was the most stolen car in Iowa during 2024. Kia and Hyundai models accounted for 18% of the over 1,000 vehicles stolen in 2024 in Des Moines, a trend that has only increased over time. The Des Moines Police Department has provided free steering wheel locks to help combat the issue. |
