Two Uncooperative Shooting Victims in Des Moines 2025-07-27

Two Des Moines men sustained gunshot wounds and multiple arrests were made in connection Sunday morning, the Des Moines Police Department said. At close to 3 a.m., officers responded to Broadlawns Medical Center where a 50-year-old man had shown up with a gunshot wound to the leg. The man was uncooperative, declining to provide details and giving officers a fake name. He was later identified as B. through further investigation and found to have an active felony arrest warrant. Just after 5 a.m., DMPD responded to the 2700 block of Euclid Ave. where officers investigated the report of a shooting at a party. An uncooperative 29-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the buttocks. He refused to provide details and denied medical aid at the scene before later taking himself to UnityPoint-Methodist Medical Care, where he remained uncooperative. During the investigation at the second incident, officers were met with an 'unruly' crowd, leading to one arrest for disorderly conduct and another for public intoxication.

Des Moines Man Arrested After High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Crash 2025-07-27

A Des Moines man is in custody and two of his passengers were injured following a crash that concluded an early Sunday pursuit, the Des Moines Police Department said. Just after 4 a.m., a DMPD officer attempted to pull a vehicle over for a traffic stop near York Street and Fremont Street. The driver, 26-year-old D. Gomez, initially began to comply but then suddenly sped away, initiating a chase. The pursuit lasted around two minutes, with Gomez driving south on SE 14th Street until he lost control, driving through a tree and fence. Gomez was arrested at the scene and taken to a local hospital for a cautionary examination. Two men riding in the vehicle with Gomez were hospitalized, with one having been treated and released while the other remains in the hospital with serious injuries. Gomez was charged with eluding, possession of a controlled substance, open container, driving while license revoked, and multiple traffic offenses.

Extreme Heat Prompts Cooling Centers, Free Transit in Polk County 2025-07-27

Polk County's Extreme Temperature Plan will be in effect starting at 8 a.m. Monday morning. Highs will be in the 90s and heat indices are expected to hit triple-digits. Due to the heat, many Polk County libraries and community centers are identified as cooling centers. The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority will provide free rides to cooling centers. Emergency shelters will also provide weather amnesty. Monday is expected to see an early morning storm possible, then mostly sunny. Hot and humid conditions with a high of 95F and a heat index as high as 115F. Tuesday will be partly to mostly sunny, with a heat index as high as 110F and showers and storms returning Tuesday night.
