Des Moines Police Identify Suspect in Fatal Shooting 2024-12-02

The Des Moines Police Department has identified the suspect who was shot and killed by officers after brandishing an airsoft pellet gun during a confrontation in downtown Des Moines last week. The suspect, 70-year-old L., was a resident of Elsie Mason Manor and was holding a pistol through the window of the building's lobby, which provides affordable housing for seniors. L. allegedly pointed the pistol in the direction of the officers, who shot him. The investigation revealed that the gun L. was holding was an airsoft pellet gun that did not have the tell-tale orange-colored safety. The two officers who shot L. are on paid administrative assignment, per Police Department policy.
