Human Trafficking Des Moines Woman Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison for Sex Trafficking 2025-04-01 Huirong Zhou, a 43-year-old Des Moines woman, has been sentenced to eight years in prison in connection to a 2024 sex trafficking investigation. Zhou was arrested in May 2024 and originally faced three charges of human trafficking. After executing a search warrant at a massage parlor on Hull Avenue, officers located three adult female victims and found evidence of forced labor and commercial sexual activity. Zhou took a plea agreement from prosecutors for lesser charges of pimping and leasing premises for prostitution. Child Abuse Grimes Man Charged with Child Endangerment After Infant Son Suffers Serious Injuries 2025-04-01 A 33-year-old Grimes father, Brett Pettit, has been charged with two felonies for allegedly abusing his 2-month-old son. On March 7, 2025, nurses at a Des Moines hospital alerted the Iowa Department of Human Services after the infant was admitted with critical injuries, including broken bones and a brain bleed. The child was transported by air ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he was expected to require brain surgery. Investigators conducted several interviews and collected evidence over more than three weeks before arresting Pettit on Monday. Shooting Iowa Attorney General Finds Fatal Shooting of Suspect by Des Moines Police Legally Justified 2025-03-31 The Iowa Attorney General's Office has concluded that the February 6 fatal shooting of David Leroy Kintz, Jr. by two Des Moines police officers was legally justified. Kintz had a warrant out for his arrest for a parole violation and told his family that he refused to go back to prison and that if law enforcement stopped him, he would stab them and 'make them kill me.' The investigation found that when officers asked Kintz to take his hands out of his pockets, he complied, but then grabbed a screwdriver from his pocket and lunged at an officer, stabbing at his head and neck. The officers then opened fire, and Kintz later died at the hospital. |
