J. faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Madison Man Charged in Aggravated Assault at UW-Madison Arboretum 2025-04-09A 37-year-old Madison man, N. Herrera Varela, has been charged with false imprisonment and strangulation and suffocation in connection with an aggravated assault at the UW-Madison Arboretum on March 31. The victim reported being strangled and forced to remain in a vehicle. Herrera Varela was arrested during a traffic stop after leaving work on April 4 and is being held on a $10,000 bond. He has no association with UW-Madison. Family Marks 14 Years Since West Des Moines Real Estate Agent's Unsolved Murder 2025-04-09The family of A. Okland, a 27-year-old real estate agent who was murdered in West Des Moines in 2011, is marking the 14th anniversary of her death with no arrests made. Okland was shot twice in a model townhome where she was holding an open house. West Des Moines police have interviewed hundreds of people and looked into over a thousand leads, with an average of 30 new leads coming in each year. The state's new Cold Case Unit is now investigating Okland's murder, and one of the unit's investigators is working on the case, which the family says gives them hope that it will be solved. |
