Iowa Man Convicted of Murdering Woman Who Refused to Get High with Him 2025-04-12

An Iowa man may spend the rest of his life behind bars after he was found guilty of murdering a random woman on the street who allegedly didn't want to get high with him. J. Bernard was convicted of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of N. Loffredo, 42, in July 2024 in Des Moines. Bernard claimed he 'felt disrespected' by Loffredo's response when he asked her to 'come get high' with him and then 'fired a handgun four times.' Surveillance footage and videos from doorbell cameras that showed the shooting were presented during the trial. Bernard, who had past drug convictions, admitted he had 'consumed cocaine and marijuana.' He faces life in prison for Loffredo's murder.

Iowa Track and Field Team Shines at Jim Duncan Invitational 2025-04-12

The Iowa track and field team competed in the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday. The Hawkeyes returned to Iowa City with four event titles and many personal bests. In the women's shot put, third-year W. Williams threw her personal best 16.15 meters, securing a top four all-time finish in program history. Fourth-year J. Itson claimed first place in the women's 800 meter. The Hawkeyes dominated the men's hammer throw, with second-year A. Busch capturing the gold and third-year S. Smith claiming silver. First-year D. Faley earned his personal best and captured the gold in the men's discus. Several Hawkeyes also earned personal bests in the 1,500 meters.
