A police chase and prior drug-related arrest led to a search warrant execution and the discovery of a dead body in a Newton residence last week, court records show. Following the June 9 search, 53-year-old J. Stevens was charged with a controlled substance violation after investigators discovered approximately 11 lbs. of a substance believed to be methamphetamine. The body of 66-year-old T. Misner Jr. of Des Moines was also found in the home. Olofson, 47, of Hudson, Iowa, failed to obey a stop sign and then began to run from officers attempting to pull him over. During the pursuit, authorities said Olofson and a female passenger began throwing meth out of the vehicle in an attempt to destroy evidence. Olofson was eventually caught after unsuccessfully attempting to drive through the fence of a collision center in Altoona. After his arrest, Olofson reportedly told authorities about the body at Stevens' home, prompting the execution of the search warrant. crime Iowa to Receive $37.8 Million from Purdue Pharma Opioid Settlement 2025-06-18 Iowa will receive nearly $40 million in a settlement with the infamous opioid producer Purdue Pharma, state Attorney General Brenna Bird has announced. The $37.8 million announced Wednesday, June 18, is Iowa's share of a multistate settlement totaling $7.4 billion with Purdue and its owners, the Sackler family. Purdue is the inventor of the painkiller OxyContin, and its aggressive sales and marketing strategies have been blamed as a major cause of the ensuing opioid addiction crisis that resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths nationwide, including hundreds every year in Iowa. The settlement, which has been held up for years in legal battles, still needs court approval. It would be paid out over 15 years, with most of the money coming over the next three years. Half of the settlement, $18.9 million, will be paid into Iowa's Opioid Settlement Fund, while the other $18.9 million will be divided among local governments. traffic accident Iowa Man Dies in Crash Outside Bagley 2025-06-18 An Iowa man has died after a crash outside Bagley, Iowa, Tuesday night, according to authorities.
