The charges are the result of Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate's effort to prevent Iowans without full U.S. citizenship from voting illegally. The Iowa Attorney General's Office has filed charges against the six individuals, who are from five different counties. Two of the individuals have pleaded not guilty to first-degree election misconduct, which is a Class D felony in Iowa. The other four individuals charged are Itzel L. of Johnson County, Jorge S-V. of Marshall County, Ahumada G. of Palo Alto County, and Jose L.M. of Sioux County. Pate had previously distributed a list of more than 2,000 names of Iowans whose citizenship his office was unable to confirm, and instructed local officials to have poll workers challenge the ballots of any individual on the list who attempted to vote. The Secretary of State's Office determined that 277 individuals without full U.S. citizenship have illegally voted or registered to vote in recent elections, with 35 casting ballots that were counted in the 2024 election and another five casting ballots that were rejected. |
