Extreme Heat Wave Hits Iowa, Cooling Centers Opened 2025-06-20

Summer officially arrives Friday — and so does the heat. KCCI's latest forecast shows highs in the mid-90s through Monday, with heat index values well into the triple digits. It only takes a few minutes for heat-related illnesses or fatalities to happen at temperatures that high. An extreme heat warning will be in effect from noon Friday through 7 p.m. Sunday for three dozen counties in western Iowa, where heat index values up to 110 are expected. Polk County officials have designated dozens of locations — city halls, libraries, malls and more — people can use as cooling centers during extreme heat. Young children, older adults, people with chronic health conditions and anyone spending extra time outdoors are especially at risk for heat-related illness.
