Des Moines Shooting Suspect Arrested in Illinois, Returned to Iowa 2025-01-12

A Des Moines man suspected in a March 2024 shooting in the East Village that seriously injured two people has been returned to Iowa after being arrested in Illinois last fall. According to the Des Moines Police Department, 26-year-old Cori Jayvon Shields is charged with two counts of attempted murder. The charges come from an incident in the early morning hours of March 24, 2024, when first responders were dispatched to a social club in the 600 block of East Fifth Street for a reported shooting. At the scene, officers found a 27-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his neck and lower body, and a 38-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Investigators identified Shields as the suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest. Des Moines police were notified in October that Shields had been taken into custody in Illinois. He was returned to Des Moines on Friday and is being held in the Polk County Jail. During the continued investigation, a handgun believed to be the one used in the shooting was found on Nov. 13 in a storm drain a few blocks from the site of the shooting. Shields is being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 21.

Ankeny Chamber of Commerce CEO Dismissed Amid Financial Investigation 2025-01-12

A criminal investigation is underway after an internal audit at the Ankeny Chamber of Commerce found 'financial irregularities.' The group's President and CEO was let go after further investigation, according to the board. In an email sent to chamber members on Monday, chairwoman Corey Morrison said the board wanted to provide 'some information regarding a recent event,' before announcing the organization's leader had been 'dismissed' on Saturday. That was the same day the Ankeny Police Department said an official complaint was filed and a criminal investigation opened into potential financial crimes. Sgt. Corey Schneden said detectives were 'actively' investigating and that the agency would provide more details as information became available. The board will begin searching for a new CEO in the coming weeks. Until then, Trent Murphy has been named as the interim CEO.

Another Lawsuit Filed Over Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll 2025-01-12

Another group is suing the Des Moines Register and pollster J. Ann Selzer over the Iowa Poll published days before the 2024 general election on behalf of the paper's subscribers, saying the Register 'delivered the dictionary definition of fake news' by publishing the poll. The Center for American Rights, a conservative nonprofit based out of Chicago, filed the lawsuit in Polk County District Court Wednesday on behalf of Dennis Donnelly of West Des Moines. It's the second lawsuit challenging the Register and Selzer over the poll published three days before the election, which found Vice President Kamala Harris leading President-elect Donald Trump by 3 percentage points among likely Iowa voters. Trump also filed a lawsuit over the poll in December. Trump won Iowa in the November election with 56% of the vote, while Harris received 43%. Both plaintiffs are suing The Des Moines Register and Gannett, the company that owns the paper, and Selzer and Selzer & Co. under the state's Consumer Fraud Act, alleging that the Iowa Poll was published despite parties knowing that the results were not accurate.
